By Pat Lisi/Southern Utah Vets Aid

By now most veterans in Southern Utah have heard the good news:  A new veteran’s retirement facility is going to be built in Ivins, Utah and the ground breaking ceremony is slated for November 11, 2011.  But, it will take a couple of years to finish.  Many vets out there have already started to inquire of the VA if they can get on the waiting list to make the new project their residence.  Right now (September, 2011) they cannot.  Calls are also coming in to the VA and Southern Utah Vets Aid asking about employment at the new facility and, again, the answer is there is no place to make application, yet.

The new veteran’s home will hold 104 vets.  There is no space at the moment to expand, either, so this may end up being the maximum in the long run.  When the application process is made available for veterans the rooms will be taken quickly.  If you get your name on the list and you are not successful in getting one of the rooms, keep trying as you will lose your place on the list if you quit.  Same with employment opportunities.

Construction should begin before the end of the year 2011 and will take at least a year to a year and a half to complete.  The photo here is a rendition of what the facility should look like by its completion.

If you want to ‘sponsor’ a room, which means your name or message would be permanently attached to a plaque outside one of the ‘houses’ (rooms), you may do so with a donation of $4,000.  If interested, please contact Pat Lisi at Southern Utah Vets Aid for more information.  Our number is 435-215-3090.  As of this writing about half the ‘houses’ have been sponsored.  You can have your own name on the plaque, or you can make it in memory of a loved one who didn’t have to be a veteran themselves.  Your generous donation is greatly appreciated.  We will post articles as time goes by regarding this project, so watch for dates that you can start applying for residency or employment at the Ivins, Utah Vet’s home.
